Amazon.com has joined the already extensive list of tech giants developing commercial blockchain solutions. According to the official blog post, the new product will be called AWS Blockchain Templates. The developers describe it as “a fast and easy way to create and deploy secure blockchain networks using open source frameworks.”
The project is aimed at developers and provides them with pre-set blockchain frameworks compatible with Ethereum and the Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger Fabric. Jeff Barr, AWS vice president and chief evangelist, explained that the decision to explore blockchain technology was made because the company believes it can open new “intriguing possibilities”:
“Some of the people that I talk to see blockchains as the foundation of a new monetary system and a way to facilitate international payments. Others see blockchains as a distributed ledger and immutable data source that can be applied to logistics, supply chain, land registration, crowdfunding and other use cases. Either way, it’s clear that there are a lot of intriguing possibilities and we are working to help our customers use this technology more effectively.”
New Amazon blockchain project will be competing with similar solutions by Oracle and IBM. Recently several Chinese companies, such as Huawei and Baidu, have also reported the plans to create their own blockchain templates.
